Questions to ask before an electrical panel upgrade

A panel proposal should explain the condition or capacity finding, proposed equipment, permits, utility coordination and testing. Empty spaces and equipment age alone do not define the project.

Ask what finding supports the recommendation

Request a clear explanation of the existing condition and the proposed load. A repair, panel replacement and service-capacity change are distinct scopes. Ask how the professional assessed compatibility and demand, and what evidence supports the work.

Compare the entire service project

Ask whether the quote includes the meter or service entrance, circuit changes, labeling and any required utility coordination. Clarify who schedules the interruption and reconnection. This website cannot predict outage duration or approve a particular service size.

Assign permit and inspection responsibility

Las Vegas’s Permit Center and Nevada State Contractors Board have different roles. Confirm the property jurisdiction, who obtains approvals and how inspection completion is documented. A mailing address does not establish the regulating municipality.

Keep exclusions and change approval visible

Ask about finish restoration, newly discovered wiring conditions and equipment lead times. Require an agreed approval point for additional work. Compare proposals with the same scope before deciding which total represents the better fit.

How the decision fits together

  1. Finding

Condition and intended demand are assessed.

  2. Scope

Equipment, circuit changes and exclusions are written down.

  3. Coordination

Permit, utility and inspection responsibilities are assigned.

  4. Completion

Testing and required approvals are documented.
